The Ultimate Packing List for the Himalayas

By Wander Without Maps · 28 Sep 2026 · Tips & Hacks

Packing for the Himalayas is tricky. The weather can swing from warm sunshine to freezing winds within hours, and altitude brings its own challenges. Pack too little and you are cold and uncomfortable; pack too much and you are dragging heavy bags up hotel stairs. This list covers everything you need for trips to Manali, Shimla, Ladakh, Rishikesh and beyond, whether you are road-tripping, trekking or simply relaxing in the hills.

The Golden Rule: Layer Up

Instead of one heavy jacket, pack three layers that you can add or remove as temperatures change:

Clothing Checklist

Footwear

Sun and Skin Protection

At high altitude, UV rays are much stronger, and the dry air is harsh on skin.

Medicines and Health Kit

Pharmacies can be far apart in remote regions, so carry a personal kit. Consult your doctor for advice specific to you.

Documents and Money

Gadgets and Gear

Seasonal Additions

Winter (December to February)

Add extra thermals, heavier gloves, woollen socks and a heavy down jacket. Snow and ice can make roads slippery, so choose shoes with excellent grip.

Monsoon (July to September)

Pack a good rain jacket, waterproof bag covers, quick-dry clothing and a few zip-lock bags to protect electronics. Landslides can cause delays, so keep snacks handy.

Summer (April to June)

Lighter layers are fine in Shimla, Manali and Rishikesh, but nights can still be cool. Ladakh always needs warm clothing.
