Dubai on a Smart Budget: A 5-Day Itinerary

Dubai has a reputation for luxury, but with smart planning it can be surprisingly affordable. Its excellent metro, free public beaches, lively old neighbourhoods and a huge range of Indian and Middle Eastern food make it an easy destination for budget-conscious travellers from India. Here is a 5-day itinerary that balances the must-see highlights with plenty of free and low-cost experiences.

Before You Go

• Best time: November to March, when temperatures are comfortable. Summer (June to August) is very hot but hotel rates drop considerably.
• Visa: Indian passport holders generally need a UAE tourist visa arranged in advance, unless eligible for visa on arrival through a qualifying visa or residence permit. Check current rules before booking.
• Where to stay: Bur Dubai, Deira or Al Barsha offer good value and are close to metro stations.
• Get a Nol card: This rechargeable card works on the metro, buses, trams and water buses and is far cheaper than taxis.

Day 1: Old Dubai and the Creek

Start where Dubai began. Walk through the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, with its wind-tower houses, art galleries and quiet lanes. Visit the Dubai Museum area and the Coffee Museum if open.

Next, take an abra (traditional wooden water taxi) across Dubai Creek for just a dirham or two. On the Deira side, explore the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Perfume Souk. Window shopping is free, and bargaining is expected if you buy.

Budget tip

Have dinner in Karama or Meena Bazaar, where Indian, Pakistani and Kerala-style restaurants serve generous meals at reasonable prices.

Day 2: Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa

Spend the morning at the Dubai Mall, one of the world's largest malls. Viewing the Dubai Aquarium from outside the tank is free. In the afternoon, visit the Burj Khalifa observation deck. Booking online in advance and choosing a non-peak slot (not sunset) is much cheaper.

In the evening, watch the Dubai Fountain show, which is completely free and runs every 30 minutes after sunset.

Day 3: Desert Safari

Relax in the morning and head out in the afternoon for a desert safari. A standard shared safari typically includes hotel pickup, dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, a sunset stop, a barbecue dinner and cultural performances. Shared safaris offer great value compared with private ones.

Budget tip

Check what is included before booking. Quad biking and photos are often extra, and prices vary widely between operators.

Day 4: Beaches and Dubai Marina

Dubai has several free public beaches. Spend the morning at JBR Beach or Kite Beach, both with clean sand, showers and a lively promenade. In the afternoon, walk along the Dubai Marina Walk and watch the yachts.

For a view of the Burj Al Arab, head to Umm Suqeim Beach near sunset. It is free and one of the best photo spots in the city. If you want a cruise, the public Dubai Ferry is a cheaper alternative to private dhow cruises.

Day 5: Culture, Frame and Markets

Visit the Dubai Frame, which offers views of both old and new Dubai at a modest entry fee. Then explore the Jumeirah Mosque, which offers guided visits for non-Muslim visitors on selected days, or the stunning Museum of the Future from the outside if tickets are beyond your budget.

End your trip at Global Village (open roughly October to April), where pavilions from dozens of countries offer food, shopping and entertainment at a reasonable entry price.
